Staffing changed in the building and special education department at the end of that school year. Through my own research and local reports, I learned that not one but two other lawsuits were underway against the same district involving concerns about acting in the best interest of students.

I requested a meeting before the following school year began. There were improvements, but there was still resistance from upper administration. With new staff and my documentation in hand, what I had gathered could no longer be denied. I was able to get changes made and additional support documented on my son's 504 plan.

I felt a sense of relief, yet there was still fear and anxiety about what might come next.

Deep down, I knew something needed to change on a bigger scale. It took time to feel ready.

A year later, I contacted local officials to try to change policies for children like my son. To use what I went through to create something better.

Their assistant happened to be on our school board, and I was told it would be investigated further. I did receive a call back and was told the principal, who had stepped down the year before, was not acting in ways that reflected the school. When asked about the administrator who had once supported him, it was acknowledged they had not handled it properly either.

I consulted with the Department of Justice and legal counsel more than once. By then, this was no longer just about my child or me. I was told I had a strong case, but pursuing it required financial resources we could not sustain.

Instead, I chose to continue speaking up, sharing my story, and finding other ways to create change in systems that were not built to support families like ours.

That is what this work is built on.

Not theory. Not strategy. It's lived experience.

The understanding of what it takes to be yourself and stand in rooms that benefit from your silence. The courage it takes to rise, use your voice, show up, and at times, stand alone.
The willingness to do what it takes to break the cycle and create change. And the choice to remain yourself when everything you've experienced could have convinced you not to.

Over time, the more I share, the more I realize how pieces of this story belong to many other women. Difficult systems have a way of making women question what they know.

This work exists because I learned what it costs to hold onto yourself anyway.

This is where purpose emerged from pain. This is why Her Dare to Rise became something bigger than me.

I used to believe documentation alone changed outcomes. I know differently now.

Communication. Policies. Documentation. They all matter.

But systems are made of people. And people bring pressure. Bias. Assumptions. Fear. Defensiveness. And sometimes people protect systems before they protect those inside them.

That experience changed how I understand advocacy. It changed how I understand trust.
It changed how I understand what happens to people who walk into difficult rooms, know something is not right, come prepared, and have the courage to stand up against resistance.

The most disruptive thing I ever did was believe myself.

Not because I was louder. Not because I was angrier. Not because I was more dramatic.

Because I refused to be silenced and held onto what I knew.

This work exists because I learned what it costs to hold onto yourself anyway.
